In Echoes of Fire, a raw and deeply human portrait is depicted of one man`s experience in the Vietnam War and the devastating impact it leaves behind, both on the battlefield and at home. Sergeant Kenneth Bennett Sr. is a soldier doing his duty in a brutal and unforgiving war. But while he faces fear, chaos, and violence overseas, another battle is quietly unfolding back home. His long absences strain the bonds of family, leaving his wife and children to carry the weight of uncertainty, distance, and emotional loss.

The Genesis of Echoes of Fire

On the 50th anniversary when my father finally left Vietnam in 1969, I had an idea to write his memoir. Starting in 2019, I wanted to write a biography. The goal was to visit Vietnamese villages where he was deployed, interviewing those who were affected by the war. I wanted to incorporate Vietnamese and American perspectives. I had ambitious plans.
However, when I obtained his military records, most bore “Top Secret” stamps about locations. A record would only state, “Tan Son Nhut Air Base.” Without specific sites, I couldn’t write a biography. Using actual events, I began writing a fictional novel.
I visited Vietnam in 2019, where I was impressed with its beautiful landscapes and the hospitality of Vietnamese. My observations and emotions during my short visit have been recorded throughout the novel. I also highlighted Thailand and Philippines where he was stationed during the war.
For two years, I researched South East countries, focusing on cultures, ceremonies, and cuisines. With several filled notebooks, I spent another two years to write and edit the book. I’m satisfied with the result.

The author

Ken Bennett Jr is the author of Echoes of Fire: The War My Father Brought Home, a powerful Vietnam War novel inspired by true events and the real-life service of his father, a combat veteran who served from 1965 to 1969. Driven by a deep personal connection to the legacy of Vietnam veterans, Ken writes to preserve their stories—their courage, their burdens, and the sacrifices that continued long after they returned home.
Ken holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Western Washington University and a Master of Public Administration from Portland State University. He also served as editor of Pathways, the publication of Portland State University’s College of Urban and Public Affairs, where he refined his ability to tell meaningful stories with clarity and purpose.
His work is defined by emotional authenticity and a commitment to honoring those who served. Rather than focusing solely on the battlefield, Ken explores the inner lives of soldiers—their loyalty, fear, resilience, and the lifelong impact of war. His writing resonates deeply with veterans, their families, and readers seeking stories of courage, truth, and remembrance.
Originally from the United States, Ken now lives in Thailand, where he continues to write and advocate for preserving the voices and experiences of the Vietnam generation.
